In 1991, Zviad Gamsakhurdia became the first democratically elected president of the newly independent Georgia. Within a few months, he was ousted by a coup d´état. Fleeing to the mountains, where loyal troops are rumored to be waiting, he hopes to emerge from exile and retake power. Set against an imposing Caucasus backdrop, director George Ovashvili presents a historical drama about a fallen leader desperately fighting to reclaim power while waging an internal struggle in anticipation of his final fate.
Ovashvili's final film in a trilogy of epic features dedicated to the recent history of Georgia, KHIBULA had its world premiere in competition at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, where it was hailed as “an impressive rumination on the downfall of power.” (Senses of Cinema).
