Umar Bin Hassan walks with difficulty and there is sadness and fatigue in his eyes. After a difficult early life, he became a major influence on the world of hip-hop through his work as a member of The Last Poets, who expressed the progressive spirit of the times starting in the late 1960s. But during the course of his adult life, he has had a string of bad relationships, left his children without a father figure and, in his darkest hour, battled a crack addiction.
“Deep inside, Umar was scared of the revolution himself,” says fellow member of The Last Poets Abiodun Oyewole. Now Hassan has taken control of his life, breaking the destructive cycle and striving to be the devoted father and grandfather that he was never fortunate enough to have.
