At the outbreak of the Second Congo War, Rwandan soldiers Sergeant Xavier and Private Faustin are sent to hunt down Hutu rebels in the vast jungles of Eastern Congo. Under the relentless command of Major Kayitare, they march 50 miles a day in pursuit of the murderers of nearly one million Tutsis during the Rwandan genocide. One night, Xavier and Faustin are accidentally left behind when the battalion races out to chase fleeing rebels. Lost, with no hope of catching their men, they embark on an odyssey across the most violent forest on earth, facing the depths of their own war-torn souls.
The acclaimed second feature from Rwandan filmmaker Joel Karekezi, THE MERCY OF THE JUNGLE had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and went on to win the Silver Hugo in the New Directors Competition at the Chicago International Film Festival. “THE MERCY OF THE JUNGLE wrings existential dread from its immersive conceit... the film’s palpably-rendered environment, with stiflingly dense foliage and vivid natural soundscapes, heightens the dizzying nature of the war.” –Beatrice Loayza, The New York Times
