Deep in the mahogany jungles of Mexico, Cándido Castro (Pedro Armendáriz) and his family go to work in a logging camp, only to find themselves the victims of savage beatings and other brutal, inhumane treatment. Pushed to the brink, Castro decides that the only way out is to lead a violent and bloody revolt against the sadistic bosses in charge.
Based on the novel by B. Traven, author of Treasure of the Sierra Madre, LA REBELION DE LOS COLGADOS (Rebellion of the Hanged), revealed the actual, appalling conditions suffered by Mexican Indians in mahogany logging camps during the rule of dictator Porfirio Díaz. The winner of four Ariel Awards, the film had its world premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival.
This 4K restoration of LA REBELION DE LOS COLGADOS from a 35mm negative by the Cineteca Nacional de Mexico is presented as it was originally created in 1954. It is a product of its time and contains cultural and racial depictions that viewers may find offensive.
