Muhammad Ali, in a rare dramatic role, plays Gideon Jackson, a former slave, who returns home after fighting in the Civil War as a free man. With the country still bitterly divided, Jackson wins election to the Constitutional Convention in South Carolina before eventually rising to become a U.S. senator.

Based on the novel by Howard Fast. Narrated by Ossie Davis, and featuring an all-star cast that also includes Kris Kristofferson, Edward Herrmann and Alfre Woodard, FREEDOM ROAD was inspired by the real-life struggles of late-19th century senators Charles Sumner and Thaddeus Stevens to bring political order and racial equality to the post-Civil War South.
