Women Composers
Women Composers • Documentary, Music, Biography
When pianist Kyra Steckeweh realized that her repertoire almost exclusively consisted of music composed by men, she began researching the work of past female composers. Searching archives, libraries and publishing houses, she discovered rarely-performed piano pieces by Mel Bonis, Lili Boulanger and Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel that had been buried by history.
In WOMEN COMPOSERS, Steckeweh provides an in-depth examination of the little-known music from these three remarkable women, while also highlighting the historical and personal circumstances under which they created their works in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Receiving recognition and acclaim in festivals around the globe, the film has won the prize for Best Documentary Made by or About Women at the Alive Doc International Film Festival in Los Angeles and Best Feature Documentary at the New York Movie Awards, as well as the prestigious Opus Klassik Award.
