Betania, a 65-year-old matriarch, is on a turbulent ride on the ever-shifting sands of time. In the wake of her husband’s death, she leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a simple, agrarian existence to move back to the village where she was born. Pushed by the ancestral sound of Maranhao, Betania and her family fight to maintain their sense of identity while tradition and modernity collide.
A world premiere in the Panorama section at the Berlinale, BETANIA is “anchored by an incredible performance and filled with heart and soul, as well as an abundance of beautiful traditions” (International Cinephile Society).
“Deeply satisfying.” –The Moveable Feast
