Clumsy Standa and recent widower Bronya are volunteer firefighters in a small Czech village. Their quiet and peaceful lives are turned upside down when a van crashes into a crowd of people during the Easter Fair, and the driver flees the scene of the crime. Convinced that this must have been an act of terrorism, Bronya reacts by turning the fire brigade into a militia.
Director Adam Koloman Rybanský’s confidently told and rhythmically compelling debut examines the mechanisms of racism and exclusion in the microcosm of a village. At the same time, he takes a loving and humorous look at human weakness, revealing a deeply humanist worldview.
“An atmospheric comedy about fear, prejudices and stubbornness, set in the sleepy Czech countryside.” –Cineuropa
