Marlena (Yoshira Escárrega) is the young wife of a powerful cartel boss, and Willy (Jorge Antonio Guerrero) is her secret lover. Fearing for their safety, the two flee separately from Mexico in hopes of someday being reunited. Willy suspects that Marlena is hiding in Montreal, so he heads to Quebec where he is hired as a seasonal worker picking lettuce. While employed at the Bécotte Farm, Willy becomes embroiled in growing tensions among the migrant laborers and is falsely accused of sexually assaulting the owner’s daughter, Lèa (Marine Johnson), who runs away in search of her own freedom.
Winner of 10 awards including Best Film and Best Director at the Quebec Cinema Awards, Ivan Grbovic’s DRUNKEN BIRDS premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was Canada’s 2022 official Oscar submission for Best International Feature Film.
