Ice Poison
Barely able to survive on their meager corn harvest, Xing-hong (Wang Shin-Hong) and his father make their way down from the mountains, hoping to borrow money from relatives. Eventually, they pawn their cow for a moped so that Xing-hong can earn a living picking up taxi fares. His first customer is Sanmei (Wu Ke-Xi), who has returned to Myanmar to escape an arranged marriage and has accepted a job as a drug runner. She persuades Xing-hong to be her driver.
Selected as Taiwan's official foreign language film entry for the Academy Awards, Midi Z's ICE POISON had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival and went on to win the Best Director and Press Award at the Taipei Film Festival.
“Strong, stylistically assured.... Burmese-born, Taiwan-based director Midi Z employs his observational style to engrossing effect, his dispassionate gaze starkly depicting the constricted options of his characters, which lead them to desperate and self-destructive actions.” –ScreenAnarchy
