Thriller
Yugoslavia, late 1980s, or so it seems. A family welcomes their beloved uncle who has returned home from Germany. The reunited family enjoys their Christmas meal until a smartphone starts ringing. The illusion is shattered. It is not the 80s, and it is not Christmas either. Suddenly it's not just the turkey that can be cut with a knife - it's also the lingering tension in the air.
The debut feature from Croatian writers/directors David Kapac and Andrija Mardešić, THE UNCLE had its world premiere at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival where it received the Proxima Competition Special Jury Mention in addition to the Best Director prizes at Sitges and Fantastic Fest.
“A bit like what would result if Yorgos Lanthimos and Michael Haneke teamed up to make the world’s most disconcerting Christmas movie. This highly disturbing (and equally absurd) horror comedy is quite the debut feature from Croatian filmmakers David Kapac and Andrija Mardešić, who have created a word where Funny Games, Dogtooth, and Groundhog Day collide, with a squirm level that is off the charts.” –Screen Zealots
