Semret (Lula Mebrahtu) is an Eritrean single mother who works at a local Zurich hospital and is studying to become a midwife. She does everything she can to ensure her child has a better life than the one she left behind in Africa. But when her now teenage daughter Joe begins to ask questions about her origins, Semret must confront the tragic memories of her past and relive her traumas as a refugee.

The feature directorial debut from Swiss filmmaker Caterina Mona, SEMRET had its world premiere at Locarno and went on to win Best Narrative Feature at the Montreal International Black Film Festival.
