The Antique
Drama
Medea (Salome Demuria), a young Georgian immigrant who works in a St. Petersburg antique workshop, goes to view an apartment in the city's historic center. The prime piece of real estate is available for a low price because its cantankerous owner, Vadim (Sergey Dreyden), comes as part of the deal. Undeterred by the odd living arrangement, Medea agrees to move in, but one of the conditions is that she is never to have any guests.
Georgia's official Oscar submission for Best International Feature, THE ANTIQUE is the latest film from award-winning writer/director Rusudan Glurjidze, which presents a “melancholic, atmospheric and ravishingly shot slice of recent history” (Variety) inside a “darkly humorous ‘odd couple’ movie about an unlikely duo thrown together by circumstances beyond their control” (Filmuforia).
“Set against the backdrop of the 2006 deportation of thousands of Georgians from Russia, this carefully crafted, darkly surreal and politically engaged film subtly depicts how state power moulds us, its deceptively amiable mood simmering with underlying violence from the very first frame before it later ignites.” –Screen Daily
