The Year of the Discovery
Documentary
Family, friends and neighbors chat inside a bar in between drinks and cigarettes. They remember unusual dreams, share stories and plan future projects. The bar is located in the city of Cartagena, in the southeast of Spain. As the day goes on, riots spurred by the industrial crisis grow ever closer.
In 1992 the Barcelona Olympic Games and the Seville Expo were held, linked to the celebration of the 5th centenary of the discovery of America. Spain was presented to the international community as a modern, developed and dynamic country. But in Cartagena protests became increasingly violent, eventually resulting in a mass uprising that culminated in the burning of the Parliament of the Autonomous Community.
Winner of Best Documentary and Best Editing at the Mar del Plata Film Festival, Luis López Carrasco's THE YEAR OF THE DISCOVERY is an “epic” experimental documentary that “blurs categories and chronologies to immersive effect” (The Hollywood Reporter).
