Action, Drama
Like many impoverished villagers at the end of the Qin Dynasty, Ma Yong Zhen (Takeshi Kaneshiro), a pugilist from Shantung, moves to big city with his brother to seek his fortune. Initially finding work as a manual laborer, Ma becomes enamored by the lifestyle of local gang boss Tam See (Yuen Biao) and sets out to rise to the top of the Shanghai triad ladder.
Directed by Corey Yuen, this Shaw Brothers production is an action-packed reimagining of the Chang Cheh classic Boxer from Shantung (1972).
“Mixing classic Shaw Brothers style with a modern New Wave edge, Yuen gives Kaneshiro his time to shine as an ultra cool action hero complete with a series of hugely impressive action sequences.” –Windows on Worlds
