While the Women Are Sleeping
Berlinale (Berlin International Film Festival) • Drama, Mystery
While vacationing with his wife at a seaside resort, Kenji, a struggling writer (Hidetoshi Nishijima, Drive My Car), becomes fascinated with a mysterious couple he notices by the pool. Later, from outside their hotel room window, he witnesses the older man (Takeshi Kitano) methodically filming the younger woman (Shiori Kutsuna) while she is sleeping. This strange interaction incites Kenji's curiosity, freeing him from his writer's block, but also leading him down a path of escalating danger.
Adapted from the short story by Spanish writer Javier Marias, WHILE THE WOMEN ARE SLEEPING is a sensual thriller from acclaimed director Wayne Wang, which had its international premiere at the Berlinale.
“The calculated fascination of a Patricia Highsmith thriller... plus some very Wang-ian tongue-in-cheek satire.” –The Hollywood Reporter
