Crime, Drama, Thriller
In a small eel-farming town in western Greece, the solitary lives of two women unexpectedly intersect. Ten years after a botched anti-terrorism raid resulted in her relocation from Athens, Elisabeth is now the local chief of police and a heavy alcoholic. Rita is a quiet and mysterious eel-hatchery worker who is suffering from strange religious visions. When a suicide sets off a series of violent events in the community, secrets long-hidden in the swamps begin to resurface, leading to a lethal confrontation between the women and their suppressors.
The chilling third film from Greek director Syllas Tzoumerkas (Homeland, A Blast), THE MIRACLE OF THE SARGASSO SEA had its world premiere at the Panorama section of the Berlinale where it was praised as an “exhilarating exercise in genre filmmaking” featuring a “hypnotically creepy blend of surrealism and near-absurdist flair that would do the Greek New Wave proud” (AwardsDaily).
