In an early twentieth century rural Southern Brazilian community settled by Italian immigrants, two close friends agree to live under the same roof together with their spouses. While struggling to survive in the New World, the wife of one gradually develops feelings and an undeniable attraction to the other's husband, The two lovers decide to elope, leaving their partners behind, who also find romance with each other.
