Irene lives in a crumbling house on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro with her husband and four sons. Fernando, her eldest boy, is a local handball star, and when he’s scouted to play professionally in Germany, the family has only a few weeks to say goodbye. While his leaving comes as a shock, it also provides a chance for Irene to see herself as a woman again and not just as a mother. As she flourishes, Irene begins to understand that the future will always be bright as long as her loved ones stick together.
The sophomore feature from Brazilian filmmaker Gustavo Pizzi (Craft), LOVELING opened the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival before going on to win seven awards including Best Film at the Grande Prêmio do Cinema Brasileiro awards.
“A wonderfully intimate project. A warm and wonderfully universal love story that comes across surprisingly unconventional for something so familiar. Brazilian star Karine Teles shines as a mother with her hands full in a melodrama that radiates with lived-in truth and everyday detail.” –Variety
