Drama
Jamila (Khadija Jaafari) is a Moroccan girl from southern Italy who is figuring out life without guidance, friends, or money. She is intelligent and resourceful and, at times, it seems she is blazing her own path. But her pride and restlessness cause her to slip through the cracks. Filmed across the span of five years, Jamila’s journey presents an intimate and respectful depiction of teenagers on the margins finding their place in society.
The first fiction feature from documentary filmmakers Alessandro Cassigoli and Casey Kaufmann, CALIFORNIE had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and went on to win the award for Best Actress at the Annecy Italian Film Festival.
“A deeply satisfying drama in the tradition of Italian neorealism centered around a family of Moroccan immigrants trying to find their footing off the coast of Naples.” –The Moveable Feast
