On a remote island, two men and a woman belonging to a mysterious religious cult devote themselves to spiritual training, following cryptic instructions promising purification and eternal peace. But as isolation takes its toll, their strict routines begin to unravel, giving way to suppressed desires, forbidden attractions, and a dangerous struggle between religious devotion and human instinct.
Adapted from Naoki Yamamoto’s provocative cult manga, BELIEVERS was a longtime passion project for acclaimed director Hideo Jojo and marked Hayato Isomura’s first starring film role. The darkly erotic psychological drama was later selected for the Tokyo International Film Festival’s retrospective celebrating Jojo as one of contemporary Japanese cinema’s most distinctive and prolific filmmakers.
