In 1997, eight-year-old Yuan moves from Hunan to Hong Kong with her mother and younger sister, hoping to begin a new life. Instead, the girls find themselves struggling with poverty, cultural displacement, and a temperamental father whose drug addiction repeatedly lands him in prison. Spanning two turbulent decades, the sisters grow from frightened children into young women determined to escape their troubled past, only to discover that family bonds are not so easily left behind.
Premiering at the Tokyo International Film Festival, FLY ME TO THE MOON, the acclaimed and deeply personal feature debut from writer-director-star Sasha Chuk, won both the FIPRESCI and NETPAC Awards, along with the Best New Performer prize for Yoyo Tseat at the Golden Horse Film Festival.
“A brooding, satisfyingly complex study of the many ways in which the bonds of family can be tested.” –Screen Daily
