Actress and psychologist Antonia Giesen decides to film a script revealed by a voice within the mind of one of her patients. Seeking collaboration with the filmmaking duo León & Cociña, they craft a crossroads of theatre, science fiction, animation and fabulated biopic, populated by parallel worlds and haunted by the shadow of a Chilean Nazi writer as a demonic figure.
“An eclectic, disturbing, and formidable foray into the creative possibilities of what cinema can be.” –Ioncinema
The second feature from award-winning Chilean filmmakers Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña, THE HYPERBOREANS had its world premiere at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight and went on to win the prize for Best Feature Film at the New Alchemists Competition of the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma.
León and Cociña are perhaps best known for creating the much-talked-about animated sequence “Hero Beau” in Ari Aster’s 2023 Golden Globe-nominated feature BEAU IS AFRAID. Ari Aster and his producing partner Lars Knudsen have also signed on as executive producers for León and Cociña's next stop-motion feature, HANSEL & GRETEL, which the directing team has described as “our very personal adaptation” of the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale.
